2nd Wollongong Community Harmony Iftar

E-mail Print
The 2nd annual Community Harmony Iftar Dinner was held on Wednesday 18th of August 2010 at the attractive reception lounge, Portofino. Although for some guests it was their second time in attending one of these iftar dinner’s, – for some, there was an air of eagerness and enthusiasm about the evening and its overall significance.

The evening was commenced by the Master of Ceremonies, Mr. Osman Karolia, who explained the importance of the Ramadan, drawing upon anecdotes to liven the atmosphere. As Mustafa Canli, Imam-Bilal Mosque read the Azan, everyone sat quietly, observing and reflecting upon the call of prayer and the blessings in front of them. After which, everyone broke their fast and listened to Noreen Hay, State MP for Wollongong, who provided some nice words about the extent of multiculturalism in Australia – a thing to be cherished. After her speech, people on each table got to converse and exchange stories and experiences.

The official part of the program commenced with Qur'an recitation by Bilal Aksoy, Imam- Auburn Gallipoli Mosque and the English translation being read by Affinity member Ms Elif Nur Tor.  A welcome speech by Semanur Kombeci, General Manager of Affinity Intercultural Foundation (Wollongong) highlighted the importance of interfaith dialogue and expressed that the organisations main aims were to build bridges and establish friendships with people within the community.

Ahmet Keskin, the Vice President of Affinity Intercultural Foundation continued the program with a humble speech that laid the foundations of Ramadan and its significance. A note which was of profound significance for all to reflect on was that the true master of people is he who serves people. Likewise we all need to open up our homes, just like Australia allowed many migrants to live and prosper in this nation.

A live performance by the Australian Sufi Music Ensemble not only provided entertainment for everyone but a captivating experience for all. The origins of Sufi music go back 900 years, which made it a real privilege to listen to instrument rich in culture and heritage.

An impromptu keynote presentation by Rev. Gordon Bradbury, who filled in for Prof. Rob Castle, did an excellent speech, considering the short notice. He echoed views that were in keeping with Affinity – that is human compassion, tolerance, acceptance and enjoyment of each other’s company, by drawing upon the story of Pentecost. He acknowledged the victims of Pakistan and stated we all share a common understanding of being human. He reflected upon the music listened to but also drew attention that the greatest music we share is a heartbeat and that we all need to be together to bring a greater and better world – messages espoused by both Jesus and Muhammed. The thesis of his message was that ‘we are all one – one family. Let’s touch each other with the message of God’s love’.

A video presentation about Ramadan was presented which tied together all the notions expressed by the speakers at the event. The message, images and music made one truly reflect upon the importance of the event.

The floor reflections were a nice way to draw active feedback from the guests. Fr. Ron Peters, Catholic Diocese of Wollongong was given the floor first and drew upon verse 42 of surat-al Asure from the Qur'an stating ‘God will bring us together and to him is our final goal’. He also quoted from the Gospel of John stating ‘that they all may be one’. Quoting from the Kuran and the Gospel, Father Ron illustrated that we as Australians have a wonderful opportunity to live not only according to those major faiths teachings but to live with one another and enjoy one another in the presence of God.

Wollongong Police Station, Multicultura Community Liaison Officer, Ms Rima El-Hage provided her view on how amazing it is that food can bring people together and the need to build on the event year after year.

Former Edmond Rice religion studies teacher, Janet Morrissey – reflected upon her experiences in giving her view, stating that 1991 Gulf War made her want to learn more about the Islamic faith. Although a challenge to learn, she eventually dispelled any thoughts she had after interacting with Muslims since 1993. In 2002, in a continuing education course, she met with executives from Affinity and stated that Affinity has had a great impact in people studying Islam for religion studies. Her final message was that ‘I hope the good work by Affinity continues as the world is not getting less complex’.

Mr John Klepczarek from Wolongong Police stated that the warmth and welcome received was above his expectations. He had been to the recent Mosque Open Day at Bilal Mosque, Cringila and stated that the ability to work with young people and involve them was a great way in generating young leaders. He was also impressed with values such as equality, community and family being present that day. He reflected upon the dinner stating that he was greeted humbly and the message posited by Affinity – inclusion – was a great message, one he wanted to be a part of.

Mr Mehmet Saral, President of Affinity Intercultural Foundation concluded the event with his speech about the work Affinity has done in the past decade. Noted that it was one thing to talk about social harmony and inclusion and it was quite another implementing it in practice. The sharing of the Ramadan iftar dinner was a great example – people were able to break bread with each other, know each other and enjoy one another’s company. He put forward that people could not walk away knowing that Muslims are not as they are portrayed in the media, thus dispelling any prejudices and misconceptions one may have had. Mehmet Saral thanked everyone who attended for sharing a sacred time with Muslims. He also acknowledged the special guests from both Muslim and non-Muslim organisations.
