On Sunday evening the 30th of August, 2010, Affinity Intercultural Foundation and Blacktown City Council co-hosted an iftar dinner for the community of Blacktown.
The Iftar was named the “Community Harmony Iftar Dinner”. The objective of the iftar was for people in the Blacktown city to accept and embrace the Muslim community and culture as a part of their social cohesion ethos.
The dinner was well represented by the Blacktown City Council Mayor Charlie Lowles, local Muslim delegates including the Mt Druitt Mosque & Blacktown Mosque community. Also in attendance were the founders of the local community schools and their staff.
Affinity Vice-President Mr Ahmet Keskin highlighted the importance of social integration and paid tribute to Blacktown City Council for being the first Council in Australia to host the Muslim community for an iftar dinner. The Mayor Charles Lowles commented on the community’s achievements and that events like these ‘allow people from different walks of life to come together and respect each other’.
Mr Ahmet Keskin awarded the Mayor with a gift on behalf of Affinity for seizing the initiative of being the first council in Australia to host an iftar dinner.
