On the 20th of August Affinity was asked to speak at the annual IEU teachers Union Conference held at the Mercure Hotel in the City.
The theme this year was on “Diversity and Inclusion”. The organisers felt that Affinity’s work fits in well with the theme and asked us to be one of the keynote addresses and to lead 2 workshops.
Ms Ruveyda Ozturk and Ms Rahile Ansari from Affinity attended the conference with Ruveyda taking the workshop, talking about her experience of being an Australian Muslim and Rahile gave the keynote address, focusing on speaking about Affinity and the works we have done for the past 10 years.
Ruveyda’s talk was captivating for most of the teachers who attended the workshop, and they were very interested to hear her story and journey to Islam. Being Ramadan, the teachers asked a lot of questions regarding the month.
Rahile talked about Affinity and presented the teachers with the Affinity presentation, looking at the work of Affinity over the past 10 years. She was asked many questions including about youth and how the Muslim community reacts to our work.
The conference was a success and we got great feedback from the teachers. Hopefully they can go back to their schools and spread the message of dialogue and cooperation.
