Affinity interview with Australian Jewish News

On 8 September, Mehmet Saral was interviewed by the Australian Jewish News on the recent Peace Talks being held between Israel and Palestinians. Mehmet was asked what he thought about these peace talks and he said he was optimistic “as a person of interfaith, intercultural dialogue”. Mehmet said, “I have to remain optimistic, I want dialogue and peace among all peoples in the world…I think both sides need to follow the United Nations regulations (for peace to occur)”.

The Rudd Government won the 2007 Federal elections on values. Prime Minister Kevin Rudd is known as an ethical man and we are promised that the policies of the Labour Government will pass through the ethical lens. The Howard Government dropped the use of multiculturalism in favour for an assimilationist social integration policy. Recently, the Rudd Government showed signs of reversal by announcing the formation of a Multicultural Advisory Committee. I recently spoke with the Honourable Laurie Ferguson, Parliamentary Secretary for Multicultural Affairs and Settlement Services, about the multicultural policy of the Rudd government.

Senator Ursula Stephens: Government has the will and intent about social inclusion

The Rudd Government has won the 2007 Federal elections on values. Prime Minister Kevin Rudd is known as an ethical man and we are promised that the policies of the Labour Government will pass through the ethical lens. Social policies are the ones that will test this promise the most. It seems that the exclusionist policy of the Howard Government is being replaced by a more inclusive policy aptly named “Social Inclusion”. I have spoken to Honourable Senator Ursula Stephens, Parliamentary Secretary for Social Inclusion & Voluntary Sector reporting to the Prime Minister.

Representing Affinity, Mehmet Ozalp was interviewed by Tracey Holmes on the ABC 702 Drive program on Tuesday 9 January. The interview, which lasted for 15 minutes, comprised a number of questions including the personal story of Mehmet, the establishment of Affinity and what is the outlook in Australia for 2007 with respect to intercultural and religious harmony.

The interview came after 25 radio hosts, producers and staff from ABC 702 radio visited Auburn Gallipoli mosque where a presentation was given about Affinity’s peace-building and dialogue activities as well as information about Islam and Muslims.
